We have a new publication out in the Journal of Popular Romance Studies, co-authored with some excellent colleagues that also forms one of the chapters of Dr Andrea Waling's forthcoming book, Exploring the Cultural Phenomenon of the Dick Pic (contracted, Routledge Press, Masculinity, Sex and Popular Culture series edited by Profs John Mercer and Clarissa Smith).
What's it about?
This paper builds on a 2018 conference presentation Dr Andrea Waling presented called "Queering the Dick Pic," which looked how using a reparative reading (Eve Sedgewick) could find alternate meanings to the normal pathologising or criminalising nature of Dick Pics.
Using a reparative reading and analysis reddit's r/softies and now defunct tumblr blogs Critique my Dick Pic (archived) and Were You Sent a Dick Pic You Didn't Want (archived), Waling and colleagues explore how the Dick Pic can be conceptualised through the lenses of the grotesque/carnivalesque, vulnerability, and the erotic.
Where can I read it?
The article is open access and freely available here!
